Brian Fojcik

Born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Brian studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, 1979-1984. He has won numerous awards including the John Milne Prize in Painting, and The Maude Gemmell Hutchison Prize (Royal Scottish Academy exhibition award 1992). Exhibitions of his work have been held regularly in public art galleries throughout Scotland.

Brians most recent works are the result of a visit to Poland, where he spent several weeks travelling by bike through the remote countryside. His wonderful large scale drawings of farm workers, sitting beneath the huge christian shrines found in some of the most remote areas of country were exhibited at 108 Fine Art in 2006.

Brian has continued to be inspired by local subjects, including a series of large drawings and paintings depicting work in a local abbatoir. His current group of paintings portray workers involved in the dismantling of a heavy engineering work factory in Kirkcaldy, reflecting the economic changes taking place in East Fife.

Critical response

Edward Gage - The Scotsman
"A perceptive observer, a sensitive and powerful draughtsman...
Fojciks response to the hounds is especially remarkable for as Degas did with race horses, he conveys both their animal beauty and their potential energy as lean mean racing machines.
With their echoes of Daumier or early Van Gogh, Fojciks observations go far beyond mere study of sporting life..."

W Gordon Smith - The Scotsman
"Fojcik is an outstanding draughtsman, mixing media to achieve drama and tension in bold but fluent and vivid monochrome.
Fojciks dogs are magnificent, as thoroughbred in their elegant arrogance as the pets of Persian Princes."
