"We are living at the end onf the twentieth century and we cannot ignore history. But then there comes the constant danger of pastiche. The challenge from the past lies in being aware of the time that we live in. After Cubism, how can you sit down and do scientific perspective? And that is a major change because the world has changed. This is not to dismiss perspective or to say that painting is dead, but it is no longer something that you yourself are discovering. You already know it, it does not have the potential that it had in the past. It's like making an explosion with black powder. You can't invent it any more. That poses a harder question because someone else has done it. That is why it is problematic to copy others, because here's no big deal, you are not taking responsibility."
From an interview with Colin Wiggins for the National Gallery catalogue, 1999
