MICHAEL LYONS

Michael Lyons work ranges from monumental sculpture in steel, stainless steel, copper and bronze for public sites, both rural and urban, to medium and small-scale pieces.

He has exhibited widely since the 60’s and gained an international reputation as a sculptor and lecturer. He lives and works from his studio in Yorkshire.

Born in Bilston, in 1943, he studied at Wolverhampton College of Art, Hornsey College of Art, and the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. From 1989 to 1993 he was Head of Sculpture at the Manchester Metropolitan University, and has taught in colleges in the UK, USA, Canada, and China.

He was a Founding member of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and served as a Trustee of the Ironbridge Open Air Museum of Steel Sculpture.He has represented Britain in Biennales in China, Argentina, Mexico and Australia. His large-scale public sculptures are sited in major cities in China, Mexico and throughout Europe and the UK.

In 1994 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors and was Vice-President from 1994 to 1997. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

A collection of his drawings and sculpture has recently been acquired by the Yale Centre for British Art, at Yale University.
