THE CHAP

In 1995 Nicholas Jolly (aka Vic Darkwood) invented The Chap magazine, a hugely successful surreal spoof on the Picture Post magazines of the 1940’s, featuring such articles as Umbrella Jousting and Pipe Signalling. The publication became a runaway success resulting in commissions for animation films and the establishment of the Chap Olympics held each year. The 2009 event will be held on Saturday 11th July in Bedford Square Gardens, London WC1.

“On this day, as in previous years, hundreds of well-dressed competitors will descend upon this verdant garden in Bloomsbury to pit their wits, their trouser creases, their cocktail mixing abilities - but not their athleticism - against their peers.”

The Lost Art of Travel was one of four books also written by Jolly and labeled “An essential companion” by comedian Jack Dee.

In 2005 Jolly gave up the lucrative role of writer to concentrate on painting, and since then he has worked from his London studio creating his new series of paintings to be shown at 108 Fine Art, Summer 2009.
