DAVID MACH RA
Born in 1956, David Mach studied at Duncan Jordanstone College of Art and the Royal College of art, where he built his first works out of mass-produced items, namely books. One of his first major projects involved building a Rolls Royce car out of thousands of books, layered one on top of the other. In 1983 he built a full scale ‘Polaris Submarine’ outside of the Hayward Gallery constructed from old car tyres. One of his largest works Fuel for the Fire’ was constructed at the Riverside Studio, London‘, incorporating 30 tonnes of magazines and furniture. His work also belongs to the realm of performance art in that the audience is invited to watch its construction. His belief is that “If it is a good idea then it shouldn’t matter how long it lasts, five minutes or forever’. Examples of his work can be seen at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and in numerous other public art galleries worldwide. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1998.
