GERALD LAING
Born in Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1936, Gerald Ogilvie Laing initially attended the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst 1953-55, then after a short Army career attended Saint Martins School of Art, 1960-64. In 1964 he moved to New York where he met and worked alongside Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Indiana. From the end of the decade he spent an increasing amount of time at his home and studio in Northern Scotland, returning to the USA to take up the post of Professor of Sculpture at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, 1976-77 and at Colombia University, New York, 1986-87. Examples of his work can be found in numerous major collections including the Tate, V&A and the National Portrait Gallery.
During the 1960's Gerald Laing attained international success as one of the major pioneers in the avant-garde art world, producing some of the most iconic Pop Art images of the time. For the next thirty years he concentrated on the development of his sculptural work, before returning to his Pop Art roots. His current series of paintings portray both contemporary celebrities, and political events. From Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham and Amy Winehouse through to his commentary on international state terrorism, Laing's iconic images of both the famous and infamous, identify and reflect current social and political changes.
