Project One: ICONS

The emergence of a 21st Century Renaissance in POP and Urban Art Culture.

108 Fine Art, 108 West End Avenue, Harrogate HG2 9BT
20th September – 11th October 2008

Over the past two years 108 Fine Art have been working with the artists Richard McTague and Jon Kendall to bring together a truly groundbreaking International exhibition of 15 artists work  A forty page fully illustrated limited edition catalogue will be available from 31st August 2008.

From modest beginnings the initial idea of creating an exhibition reflecting current interest in contemporary Urban art has evolved into a much larger, inspired project involving work from the original innovators of POP art such as Gerald Laing and Peter Blake, through to David Mach and Julian Opie. International artists will feature prominently with Charles Lutz from Brooklyn, Blek Le Rat and Space Invader from France and Mimmo Rotella from Italy. .

A visit the artist Blek Le Rat’s studio on the outskirts of Paris has resulted in two of the artist most important early works being sent to the UK for the ICONS exhibition. The exhibition will also be the first opportunity in the U.K. to view original works directly from the studio of Brooklyn based artist Charles Lutz whose ‘Warhol Denied’ images and recent paintings and sculpture are attracting a surge of interest and a growing band of supporters both here and in the U.S.

Two of the U.K.’s most dynamic and expressive sculptors, Tim Shaw and Michael Sandle have agreed to participate in this seminal exhibition, their use of iconic internationally known images and symbols resonating with the essence of their time: Michael Sandle’s use of Mickey Mouse in his incredible A 20th Century Memorial (now in the Tate Collection) and Tim Shaw’s black bin bag and wax sculptures Man On Fire and Prisoner at Abu Ghraib produced in a response to the horrific images of torture and state terrorism, captured by the media and broadcast across the world.

The crossover between those working with music and art has also become a major aspect of the exhibition, with early original Sex Pistols artwork from Jamie Reid, original paintings by Goldie, and the inspired artwork of James Cauty formerly of the KLF.

Live music will also feature in ICONS, with The Prelude, one of the most exciting and energetic bands to have emerged from Northern Ireland in the past decade agreeing to participate in the celebrations. The Prelude will perform live in the gas-lit setting of Hales Bar, Harrogate 10pm – 1am, Friday 19th September. Guest DJ’s will also play on the evening.

Project One: ICONS will be the one of the most innovative exhibitions to have been held at 108 Fine Art and a first for the North of England. Project Two will be announced in January 2009.
